What is NDIS?

Have you heard about the NDIS? Yes…No…well here is a little about the Scheme and how Chodat Fitness can support people who have funding through the NDIS and want to live a healthier life through exercise.

The NDIS or National Disability Insurance Scheme is a Federal Government initiative that provides support to people with a permanent and significant disability as well as their families or carers.

As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing in people with disability early to improve their outcomes later in life.

The NDIS gives all Australians peace of mind that if their child or loved one is born with or acquires a permanent and significant disability they will get the support they need. IMG_8951

The NDIS provides funding based on agreed goals between the person, their family and a NDIS Planner. These goals can be anything that are reasonable (legal) and realistic for the person to achieve in what is called an ordinary life’ (that is, a life that anybody else that does not have a disability is expected to have). Examples include funding to help a person learn to be more independent around their home, in the community or to get a job.

Many people with a disability that receive an NDIS Plan and have what is called CORE funding. This funding is for very broad areas of support and includes social, recreational and community support. This can be (but not limited to) supporting goals such as being part of your community, learning recreational skills, independent living and even personal care. Chodat Fitness is able to support individuals under this funding arrangement where the person and/or their family are seeking health and fitness goals.

Sometimes the person with a disability also receives capacity building funding which is linked to developing new skills that are quite specific to the individual. Occasionally this may include support the for the person to be fitter and healthier through exercise and can fund both personal or small group training (up to three people at a time with a trainer). Here also is where Chodat Fitness can be of assistance.
