Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis
Have you heard about ‘keeping your NEAT up’?
Firstly what is Thermogenesis? “Thermogenesis is a metabolic process during which your body burns calories to produce heat. Several factors induce thermogenesis in your body including exercise, diet and environmental temperature. Thermogenesis can promote weight loss because it increases your body’s calorie burn.”
NEAT is the calories burnt through movement outside of formal exercise, so standing, walking, climbing stairs, fidgeting. The expenditure contributes to more daily calorie burn then you actual workout. Highly active people can expend up to three times more energy in 24 hours than sedentary people.
NEAT is often over looked as a weight loss strategy but represents the largest contributor to physical activity along side food/drink in take that is understood and managed in a deficit to lose weight.
